Marine Diesel Engine Overhauls, Part 1

We get a common complaint from Yacht Brokers and private owners of larger marine vessels periodically. This has to do with a major discrepancy for their marine diesel engines’ overall health. When was the last time they had a certified marine diesel engine mechanic do routine maintenance? Lately I have seen owners and yacht brokers alike claiming complete marine diesel engine overhaul. Claiming that they have rebuilt marine diesel engines when they don’t is serious fraud.

The fraudulent scenario can be fueled by different agendas. Maybe the owner selling doesn’t know the yacht broker is claiming a full marine diesel engine overhaul. So after the prospective new owner arrives for a boat inspection and professional yacht survey they get startling news. After being assured from the yacht broker the engines have undergone a complete marine diesel engine overhaul. After completion of the survey they find out there is absolutely zero evidence of any type of rebuild or overhaul activity. The marine diesel engines are rusty and have signs of cobwebs without any signs of a bolt ever being turned in months.

Don’t let fresh paint fool you just because somebody freshly applied some paint. A reputable Marine Diesel Engine Mechanic will be proud of his work and not try and cover it up with a can of spray paint. RPM Diesel Engine Co will always provide you with a detailed invoice of all parts and expenditures related to your engine overhaul. We’re not pointing fingers here because sometimes the Marine Diesel Engine Mechanic was just told to do routine maintenance.Whether a cylinder head overhaul or another basic maintenance repair that is innocuous to overhaul health of your marine engine power plants. The marine mechanic doesn’t know up front that said broker or owner is going to falsely represent basic diesel engine maintenance as a complete diesel engine overhaul.

Sometimes the so called overhaul is of a nefarious nature from the get go. The repair of a faulty condition from a severe overheat or damage from running aground that caused a bent shaft to damage core internal engine components. Diesel engines are some of the sturdiest and most reliable power plants for the marine industry. Delicate and precious aren’t common words associated with your Marine Diesel engine. If running your diesels without proper water flow (sea cock closed) or oil (viscosity) then they can become fragile and susceptible to detrimental damage. Honesty with your marine mechanic is key here. How many times have you heard of someone stretching the truth a tad concerning oil or water after their engine is spewing smoke or steam. Sometimes these service calls are done to cover up a larger problem. Was there any damage in the first place? Was it repaired properly?  Are there any other conditions you weren’t informed about?

Again we are not trying to play judge, jury and executioner here. Just use a reputable marine diesel engine mechanic like RPM Diesel Engine Co. who will provide you with the most in depth invoice with manufacturer part numbers and hours spent. We take the utmost pride in our work and provide complete accountability. Can you imagine being the buyer? When making a purchase such as a large yacht, you might be required to fly out of state or country. More than likely that perspective yacht buyer will never purchase from that broker or anyone associated with him.
